Fall Felt & Ribbon Rosette Tutorial

Bring a little handmade charm to your fall projects with this sweet ribbon and felt rosette! With dusty pink, olive green, and mustard yellow, this color combo feels perfectly autumnal without leaning too heavily into the traditional orange-and-brown fall palette.

This layered rosette is a fun way to use coordinating ribbons, felt details, and a little bit of texture. They are such cute accessories for bags, as pins, and more!

What You’ll Need

Your choice of ribbon

White or cream felt

Felt die cut or cutout 

Scissors

Hot glue gun and glue

Alligator clip, barrette, or other attachment of your choice

Step 1

Start by cutting three pieces of your thickest width ribbon into equal lengths.

Fold each piece into a loop and secure the ends together with hot glue. Arrange the loops around a central point, layering them slightly as you go to create a full, dimensional base.

Don’t worry about making everything perfectly symmetrical—the little variations are part of what makes a handmade rosette so cute!

Step 2

Next, cut three, shorter lengths of the smaller width ribbon. 

Create loops in the same way and layer them over the green base. Position the loops so that they sit between the base loops, allowing both colors to peek through.

This second layer is what gives the rosette its fuller, more dimensional shape.

Step 3

Cut a small circle from cream or white felt to create the center of your rosette.

For a little fall-inspired detail, we chose a star from dark green felt and glued it onto the center circle.

Then attach the finished felt piece to the middle of the ribbon layers. This gives the rosette a clean focal point while adding a little handmade felt detail.

Step 4

For the tails, cut two pieces of ribbon to your desired length.

Finish the ends with a classic dovetail cut by folding each ribbon in half lengthwise and cutting diagonally from the folded edge toward the open edge.

Layer the two tails underneath the rosette and secure them with hot glue.

Step 5

Cut two lengths of mustard yellow ric-rac and two lengths of dusty pink ric-rac. Arrange them along the sides of the ribbon tails, letting the wavy edges add a little movement and texture.

Glue everything securely to the back of the rosette.

The combination of grosgrain ribbon and ric-rac gives the finished piece a fun mix of textures while keeping the overall look soft and handmade.

Step 6

Once everything is securely glued, attach your preferred backing—an alligator clip, barrette, pin, or whatever you’re using for your project to another felt circle. 

Give the loops a little fluff and adjust the layers until everything looks full and balanced.

Try swapping the colors around with whatever you have in your ribbon stash. Deep burgundy, muted plum, chocolate brown, cream, rust, or even a soft blue can make a gorgeous fall combination.
