Everyone’s favorite musical is nearly here! We can’t wait and are getting ready in style with our adorable new Magical Friends Felt Dolls! We’ve done most of the work for you to make it as easy as possible to make your very own set of dolls! So grab your supplies and coffee and follow along as we take you step-by-step through how to make and accessorize your very own dolls.
First, make sure you pick up your Magical Friends Doll Body Die Cuts pieces so you are ready to go! You will also need to get your SVG download set for their clothing and accessories. In addition for felt, you will need:
2 Sheets 9x12” Light Pink Glitter Felt
1 Sheet 9x12” Black Glitter Felt
1 Sheet 9x12” Silver Glitter Felt
If you would like to make an optional wand, you will need an 8” crafting dowel and a 5 yard roll of ⅜” baby pink ribbon and some sparkle yarn.
To assemble the pieces you will need a hot glue gun, optional sewing machine, ½” stick-on velcro, and fabric scissors and a printer or cutting machine such as a Cricut.
First, download your SVG and cut all pieces in the coordinating colors using either your printer and scissors or Cricut machine.
First you will need to hand stitch each of your doll bodies together and attach their hair. Check out our Felt Doll body assembly tutorial get your doll bodies ready.
Once your doll bodies are ready, we will get their accessories assembled! Let's start with our Suntan felt doll. Lay the below piece of light pink glitter felt, glitter side down and then lay your doll body in the middle of the piece. You will wrap each side around to the front of the doll, starting with the shorter side.
Attach a piece of velcro to the end of the straight side and then wrap it around the doll tight and mark on the other side of the felt where to attach the other side of the velcro. Doll is flipped to her back in this photo.
Next we will need to assemble the skirt. Lay your larger hot pink skirt piece down first and layer the light pink glitter felt skirt piece on top, matching up the inner curves.
You will want to glue the straight edges and the inner curve together so that the pieces stay together.
Next, you will add your velcro to each side. One side of the velcro will go on the underside of the skirt and one on the top side so that when you wrap them around, they will overlap and stick together.
Wrap the skirt over the bodice of the dress and velcro it shut.
Finally, to complete her look, you will need your silver glitter crown piece! Fit this piece to her head and glue the ends together. Your good witch is ready to make some magic!
Next, let’s work on our Magical Forest Felt Doll outfit. Starting with her hat, grab your two black glitter felt pieces you cut out.
Taking the triangular piece, roll it inward into a cone shape with the ends overlapping slightly and glue the sides together.
Slide your circular piece over the top of the cone down to the bottom where it fits relatively snug. Flipping it over, use your glue gun to glue this piece in place.
And your witch hat is ready to go!
Next, let’s make her dress. Her dress is made of two parts, the upper bodice and the skirt. For the best looking bodice, a sewing machine is recommended however, it can be done using a glue gun.
Starting with the bodice, you have two sleeve pieces (shown on the left), a front piece, and two overlapping back pieces.
We will first want to sew the shoulder seams of the front and back pieces together. With this felt, there is no right or wrong side, just make sure your seams are both facing the same direction.
Next we will need to sew each arm piece in. This is the trickiest part of the whole garment! Start by lining up the center top the the sleeve piece(highest part of the curve) with the shoulder seam. The front arm hole is a bit longer than the back so make sure the longer side of the should part of the sleeve is matching up with the front side of the bodice.
It can be helpful to clip one side together first to make sure the ends of the sleeve and bodice match up first before sewing or gluing.
Then moving the shoulder of the sleeve along to match up with the armhole as you go, sew or glue the sleeve to the bodice. It can be helpful to start from the center and work outwards in two steps. Repeat this step on the other arm.
Now you will be able to fold your sleeves and bodice so that the sides lay on top of each other and you can sew the sleeve and body shut on each side, sewing along the underarm and side of the bodice.
Once you are finished, turn your bodice right side out and you are ready to attach velcro. Attach one side of the velcro to the underside of the longer back piece. Putting your bodice onto the doll at this point can help line up placing the other side of your velcro in case it needs to be adjusted. Otherwise, add the other side of the velcro to the top side of the shorter back piece so that the velcro sides will shut when laid on top of each other.
Finally, we will make the skirt!
Once the skirt is cut, you can run a loose running stitch through the top curve of the skirt and then tying one end, pull the other end so that you create gathering along the top edge. Test it around your doll body to see how tight you need to pull it and then secure the other side with a knot as well. You can then sew over the top to secure it. An alternative option is to fold two small pleats into the top of the skirt and glue or sew those down. This gives the skirt a bit of extra stability and body.
The last bit is to add the velcro to the back side of the skirt. Remember one side of the velcro goes on the outside of the skirt and the other on the inside so that they will overlap each other and lay flat.
Then go ahead and dress your doll!Secure the bodice on first and vecro the skirt on over the top. Finally, add her sparkling hat and she is ready to go!
We hope you have so much fun making these adorable dolls!
